I often get e-mails asking how stained glass panels are built. There are many different ways to build panels and every artist has their own methods. I use a traditional method.
All panels are built with various combinations of stained glass, glass bevels and clear glass. Every piece is cut by hand and using diamond cutting / grinding tools is fitted to its neighbor. Lead in the shape of the letter “H” called Came is fitted between all pieces and soldered together where two or more strips contact each other. A zinc metal frame is fitted around the outside and soldered in place.
The panel is washed, and allowed to dry for at least a day.
The putty is made by hand in the traditional way with whiting and linseed oils and is worked into any spaces between the lead strips and the glass. The putty seals and strengthens the panel. Fine sawdust is brushed all over the panel to remove any excess putty from the lead and glass.
After the panel has set a few days for the putty to set up the frame is painted a flat black and provision for hanging the panel either horizontally or vertically are made.
